“Silencer” or “Muffler” for 1970 DT1C was created by EnduroDog
Hello All,
I recently finished a restoration on my 1970 DT1C. One of the things a enjoy about the bike is that wonderful sound only a 2-stroke Enduro can make. Unfortunately my neighbors do not feel the same way : ). Has anyone tried to reduce the dBs a bit by using an after market “muffler” or “silencer” on their stock exhaust?
Thanks!

Maybe the spark arrestor has been removed.. Might be able to attach an aftermarket effective tail pipe muffler with spark arrestor as part of it. I have something homemade & not pretty but is affective.

Man that's Uuuugggly lol.
Often the problen is resonating through the thin walls too. I was always going to get some wrap like i've see in adverts--with stuff--to wrap the complete system to deaden the resonating. Just make even uglier--but!!
Had an RD350LC complete exhaust on my RT1-360 to ride to work & was almost silent, heavy walls & thick header compared to the trail pipe. The days before digital cameras unfortunately.

Thanks RT325.
Spark arrestor is in place, bike is completely stock.
I was hoping for an easy fix, like a small muffler-type device I could quickly put over the present pipe.
Maybe what I need is new neighbors : )

Have your neighbors actually complained, or do you just have a feeling that it might be annoying them? You can always ride out of the neighborhood at low rpm, then at least they'll know you're making an effort to keep it quiet. Luckily, my neighbors don't seem to care, and a lot of them have hot rods and bikes too. Though there is one guy that works on VW sand rails that seem to have straight pipes, who everyone hates

Good question Tom P!
You are correct, I have not had any complaints, it’s just a hunch; they are all too nice to complain.
Interestingly, since I have started to ride the bike two people walking our road have waved me down as I was riding by. I thought they were upset with the noise but instead we had long conversations on the old two strokes and how they loved them!
I still would like to have an easy option for quieting them down a bit if I want.

Almost every time I ride my CT-1 around town someone rolls down their window at a stop light and says they once had one, or I get thumbs up. Don't worry about it. Many bikes are MUCH louder.

It could just be because it's a motorcycle too.
I had a neighbor that complained if I started my box-stock 2017 XT250 and let it idle a minute or two on the driveway to warm up before riding off. And it was QUIET compared to my old two strokes.
Same neighbor never said a word about me warming up my 450 HP small block Ford Ranchero, in fact he complimented me on the sound. The Ranchero is much louder than any of my bikes.

I got pulled over once for the racket my YDS3 was making and spent 10 minutes patiently explaining to the officer that my bike didn't need a "muffler", I couldn't just buy a "muffler" at the local auto parts store, and that it was equipped with one already.
Something about the ring-a-dings gets certain people more riled than when a Harley with aftermarket pipes goes by sounding like an artillery piece and I don't know why.

Thanks to all of you for your feedback.
A little over a year ago we moved to a hear-your-own-heartbeat quiet part of coastal Maine. I think you guys are right and I will just talk to my neighbors about the bike and try to minimize the noise when I can which will include not installing the “sleeper pipe” I had made by a Forum member. Well, maybe I’ll put it on briefly since I am dying to hear it! : ). I would really like to hear the bike with the expansion chamber I had as a kid but that would be pushing it I think.
This is off topic, but I wonder if someone can point me in the right direction for instructions on how to add images to a post on the Forum? I am pretty pleased with the way the bike turned out and want to show it off( like you guys haven’t seen a re-done Enduro : )!
Thanks again for your feedback on the muffler thing. : ).
