1980 DT175 - 2nd gear pinion grooves was created by ajhuxley

Hi
quick question just for interest. Im sure the grooves are meant to be there on this pinion (see pic) and Im guessing they're for lubrication but can anyone confirm that. (Ive seen many pics where this pinion doesnt have grooves)

I'm not sure what the exact purpose but it certainly isn't an issue.
