Stripped screw head on oil pump cover- was created by EnduroDan

PO left me a little gift with this stripped out phillips head screw on the oil pump cover.  My plan is to dremel in a groove so I can take it out with a flat head screwdriver, but before I did that I wanted to run it past you guys and see of you had any other ideas.

There are lots of techniques, but that is a good starting point.   Go for it..  and then replace it with an allen head from your local hardware store.

Oh, those damn PO's !!

Although you run the risk of chipping off a portion of the screw head with this techique, making difficult the option of the slot idea that the owner has.

Left handed drill bits. You have plenty of metal left in the "Phillips head" area for a left handed drill bit to catch on and back out the screw.
And then I'd replace it with a genuine Yamaha screw and get myself a set of Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) screwdrivers.

That screw head might be too far gone, but I have repeatedly tapped one like in your picture with the round end of a ball peen hammer.  You can sometimes get a tight fit again with a phillips bit.  Impact drivers used properly with a tight bit are the best.

But cutting a slot and using a chisel or flathead screw work well too.

With a dremel you run the risk of nicking side cover. Flip a coin.

All strategies must be accomplished carefully.    The degree of success is in your skill and application of caution.

I have had some of those screws that were so damaged, I had to drill the screw head off then remove the screw once I got the cover off.
