New Member - 1977 Yamaha IT400 was created by slinn3

Hello all!My name is Stephen and I am new member to the Yamaha-Enduro forum. I appreciate the opportunity to be a part of this group and for all the knowledge and assistance that I am sure to receive from its members. So thank you to everyone in advance! My family has been very much into motorcycles for the better part of 60 years, and one bike that I have recently taken an interest in restoring is our 1977 Yamaha IT400. The bike is all original and in incredible shape given its age. It sat properly stored for nearly 40 years and after a simple carb cleaning and good fuel I was able to enjoy its sound again. All things currently work as they should (at least from my perspective), but there are a few items I know I will need to update/replace/, I know I will need a new kick start lever as this was somehow bent and is now rubbing the number plate. My understanding is these are no longer available and might even be impossible to find good used examples these days. Several other areas of concern are the Brake/Clutch cables, brake shoes, Carburetor rebuild kits, Carb intake manifold boot, reeds, and fork seals/rebuild kits. The rear mono-shock seems to be working properly, but I honestly don’t know where to start with maintenance or settings adjustment on this. We also have 78” IT250 and 78” YZ250E which I believe both ran this same shock. Anyways, I’m just looking for some help and or direction from any that might have experience or the know how in this endeavor! Thank you all again in advance and enjoy my picture!I have more of these if this attachment works!Best Regards,Stephen

Yes change your Brake Shoes they can delaminate that’s the first thing I do. KDI a sponsor may have your cables on EBay his items are top notch. I would stay away from carb rebuild kits just buy genuine Mikuni parts if needed. To post pics you’ll need to use a third party to upload ie Imgur, google photos etc

I wonder if the manual for your bike is in the tech library. Back up at the top of the page.
Welcome!

Welcome from NZ the kick lever is a malleable steel of some sort & you should be able to bend it around without breaking if you can clamp it on the vice somehow. I had an IT400 motor in a monoshock DT250 for a while with intentions of road racing it then changed it to vintage mx configuration. Too long ago to remember haha. You have the pick of the crop with the bikes you mentioned. To add photos they need to come via an external source like imgur or Google photos I just link through as not worked out how to link them live & open, but it works.
