Thanks MarkT.
I need to rephrase my question. Engine is out and on the bench, how and what do I need to connect to show a spark when I spin it over, with no main loom involved? Assuming this can be done?

Answer is still the same except you need to ground the frame of the ignition coil to the engine since the engine is on the bench.

Oh and spark plug needs to be grounded to engine...  same ground for everything.

Points wire out of stator is "officially" black/white but is often just solid black.

Or just remove coil off the frame & sit it on the head or clip an earth lead from coil to the head or anywhere on the motor to be sure.
