DT175H no spark was created by AirborneSilva

Hi guys, thought I'd start a different thread since I've seem to have lost spark making the other thread a moot point.  I tested the pulsar coil and got a reading of 9 ohms, I had my meter set at Rx1 as the service manual states.  The service manual says it should be 12.4 ohms +/- 10% which I'm not that good at math but that to me just doing it in my head is out of spec.  However the supplemental service manual says it should read 10 ohms +/- 10% which would put it in spec but just barely.

I didn't see it in either of the service manuals, how can I check the CDI?

As always, thanks for the help!  Tony

I probably shouldn't ask sorry but were you spinning it anti clockwise, normal motor rotation?. Pulser will be ok but be good to know what the source coil shows. Not sure about the cdi box but manuals at work used to tell us if Everything else checks out ok with tests then Replace the box. But in the end it just 'might' be a dry solder joint or bad crimping of a connector. I hate electrics lol.

Hi Morley, was I supposed to be spinning the motor while testing? It didn't mention that in the manual. I'm assuming the charge coil is fine, when I was testing for spark with my drill, running the drill anti clockwise as you say, the gauge lights lit up nice and bright.

For the record, I hate electrics too but these bikes are forcing me to learn about it - guess that's not entirely a bad thing but does stress me out!

sorry, no spinning for ohms testing but just see if it sparks at the plug. You say your lights lit up but that's the lighting coil doing its job & not related to the ignition source coil.

Thanks Morely, I did the two tests the manual had, the one for the pulsar coil, just tested the charge coil, the book says test it on Rx10, I got a reading of 18 so I'm guessing you multiply that by 10 which gives me 180 and is far from the 300 it's supposed to be.. So, could it be my charge coil is bad?

Yes i does sound like it more than likely the problem. If you spin it with plug resting on the head & as fast as the drill will go it could develop enough volts to get spark just by spinning faster than you can kick. Be interesting to find out. Alternatively kick it over & see what you get from the source coil. I think you need about 80 volts "i use a peak meter so get double 160". I'm just thinking back many years to when things like that were quite common problems.

When I was spinning it with the drill I looked at the tach, it was hitting 2500 RPM, no spark...

Yep, ok now do the same just testing source coil output on ac volts directly to whatever color it id black with-red tracer guessing.

Charge coil is brown and pulser is white/red so I'm guessing connect it to brown? I'll give it a try but am beginning to believe that I'm going to end up sending the stator to Deet so he can do his magic on it but will be putting this to the side for a while, need to get a new rod and bearing on my DT400, it's about ready for the road after that.
