Why just the 175s? was created by Schu

My collection of Yamaha Enduros span the entire range from 60cc thru 400cc. Five of them are 175s and those five all have more top end noise/rattle than any of the others. Is there a legitimate reason or is it simply that all five of my 175s must be tired and worn out?

Ok, I know there are mixed opinions regarding info obtained from Google AI, but here it is.

I just got done doing a complete engine rebuild on my 1969 CT175 including having the crank rebuilt / new rod and a new top end bored oversize. Engine sounds great, No top end noise/rattle what-so-ever. In fact it's one of the best sounding/running engines i have seen on any of the Yamaha enduro's i have owned.

In my experience most if not all top end noise/rattle is due to loose tolerances or cylinder bores with uneven wear. Always have the cylinder bored to the min side of the manufacturer specs. I have seen new bore jobs that still have top end/rattle noise due to the machine shop getting the clearances to loose. It doesn't take much.

Well then I guess that means these old girls are simply tired and worn out.
But then looking at the overall picture…..I too am tired and worn out.
So I think I will simply turn off my hearing aids and Rattle On!
Hopefully they will continue to run for as long or longer than I continue to ride.

Schu,

Nice collection of 175's.

If you ever want to sell one of those aftermarket pipes or see one for sale that you don't want let me know. I just missed a new one on facebook.

I tend to agree with Skydancer and not so much with AI.

One of the things that I've found is that many shops that bore tend to ignore the factory clearance specs and add an extra thou or two thinking it will help prevent a seizure.  If you have someone who knows what they are doing, they don't rattle.

Clutch and gear rattle is a thing though too.  Try putting it in gear and let the clutch out so it drags the tiniest bit.  The little bit of load will quiet the clutch.

SCHU, my 175B does rattle at idle and up to 3000 rpm above that it is not noisy. I should only have somewhere around 3000 to 4000 miles on a 1st oversized piston. All that I had done was cylinder bored, ports cleaned/smoothed up and piston bearing. The person who did the work definitely knows what he is doing.

Well I just added another 175 to my collection. (DT175E) I couldn’t pass it up. It is completely original with only 3,500 miles. It runs and rides perfectly and has a clear title. And it was only an hour ride from home. I’ll do a separate post on it once I get into it a bit and create my To Do list.
