+1

If numbers are genuine, then you may well have a pre-production model.

Maybe post where in the world you are and if you know any of the bike's history.

I am a collector in Minnesota, I bought this bike many years ago (15) from a guy that moved here from Colorado, it was a basket case sitting on his apartment deck, Motor was full of water and parts were missing but the frame number matched the motor, sent the motor out for the rebuild and collected parts over the years and put it together, runs good! I also own a couple 70 DT1's, a 69 DT1, 72 DT2 with my collection of Arctic Cat Mini Bikes and 3 Early Husqvarnas. I took the best photos I could The Vin# I posted is correct.

I just checked my 76 DT400B, and your stampings look good to me! Very nice!

Did you get a title with it?

For what it's worth, the 75 DT400B Owners Manual in the tech library shows a picture of engine serial number 501-000003 ! I can't read the frame SN in the owners manual.

.
Someone emailed me the following question, so thought I'd respond here in the thread.

.

Take a look at this thread. Are our VIN charts off?
yamaha-enduros.com/index.php/forums/74-7...estion-advice#116718
.

RESPONSE:
No . . . . our charts reflect "multiply" Yamaha sources of production information.

The stamping looks genuine to me . . . and furthermore, the frame doesn't appear to have the Government mandated ID sticker

Any bike with the last three digits below XXX101, is a pre-production version of that model.

Think about it . . . every new bike came with a owners manual, and obviously the manuals had to be ready ahead of time ..... meaning .... before the new model's release, in order for everybody to get one with their bike.

Many of the owners manuals show a picture of the VIN number location, and those that do, show models with numbers "below" XXX101 because the bikes hadn't been released yet, as the bikes and manuals were still under construction.

The bike in question was probably a "sample bike" that had been sent over from Japan, to the US " Yamaha International Corporation" which was located in Buena Park, California . . . for testing and review . . . and possibly was a magazine test bike as well.

A VERY unique find :likey

Back in about 1980 a friend loaned me a pre-production Honda XR80 for a desert trip... instead of the normal headstock stickers, it was marked "property of Honda" and some sort of disclaimer that it was never to be sold or registered or something like that. It had a low VIN too.

It was a fun little bike... my girlfriend had a blast on it. I was a little worried because she was a new rider and the XR was basically in brand new condition when I picked it up. He told me not to worry because "by law" Honda would be destroying the bike when he returned it to them...

I wonder if Yamaha was supposed to destroy the pre-production bikes they sent here?
