1989 XT 600 decompression setup. was created by Thegreenhornkid67

Howdy. I've been putting the top end of my 89 600 back together and I a little confused by how the decompression unit goes back together. The manual shows the top part of the decompression bracket sitting vertical with the engine and you check the free play in that position. In that vertical position on my bike theres a cable hold down bracket that I assumed was bolted down with the decompression stay bolt(?) If that is true my decompression unit sits more at a 2 o'clock position to line up the cable bracket, nearly touching the horn. Now I'm wondering if the cable hold down bracket is supposed to go under the cylinder head hex bolt that it seems to line up to in the vertical position(?) I will take some pictures tmrw to show my situation but does anyone know exactly how the decompression valve sits in relation to the engine and which bolt on the cylimder head holds down the decompression cable stay??
Thanks!

Thanks Rick. That helps clarify a few things. So I assume the bracket that holds the cable close to the decomp valve and attaches to the cylinder head, goes where #14 bolt and washer are but I dont even see it in this parts diagram. The diagram shows the decomp valve sitting vertical. If I do mine vertical the bracket lines up with head bolt #30 but doesnt show a bracket ther either and doesnt seem likely either. Pretty sure I would have kept a written AND memtal note of it. Im gonna post some pictures to show what Im dealing with.

Reverse that! #14 and number 30 bolts should be reversed in my description. Shoot!

It looks as though the bracket attaches under the bolt in the second picture. The cylinder head has a groove that the bracket would lay flush aside once bolted down. Also keeps the decomp valve vertical. Anyone else have an opinion or clear answer? Not sure if it could be seen without taking the fuel tank off to have a gander? Thoughts and or opinions appreciated!

Well, battened everything back down, put in fresh gas, kicked it over 4 or 5 times, and it roared back to life. Just need to adjust the idle and perhaps buy a new battery and head to the DMV. Thanks everyone for your help! Now on to my '78 TT 500 projects. One original and one modified.

Good to hear you got some where. Have a 78 xt basket case in line also. Though not 2 strokes, they are iconic in their own right.

PS. Probably should post lots of pictures for our own satisfaction. Enduroholism is a visual disease. Hope you understand.
