.

There are plenty of std size pistons on eBay, but the standard size rings to match it are quite scarce, and VERY expensive when found.
So, this is what I'd suggest . . . .
Save your money and buy this TY250 set from the UK . . . which just so happens to be the exact same piston that your Enduro model used.

Wow that's a cheap piston kit. Will be aftermarket but what the hell. Looks great.

This is a question from an inexperienced motor/piston guy. What is the feasibility of taking a 1st O/s ring set and measuring and filing it for the proper ring gap, taking pains to endure the ends are filed square etc and using them in place of the very scarce STD ring set for the DT250A,B,C. It seems as though it would be slightly out of round and not provide optimal sealing. I would like to get an older motor running with a "decent" piston and bore on the cheap, bore and hone later...I'd like to have 2 bikes (1974 DT2050A's) running this spring and my main project is stealing all the budget..

Thoughts?

I don't believe that would work . Filing back the ring ends could be done ,
but that would need the ring peg recesses to be altered too , and I don't think
that would be manageable with just a file .

I guess in desperate times it could be done, I have files rings to fit but it was for a 4 stroke engine, no locating pin.

Thanks Mark

I've done it... worked fine... Yamaha oversize is ~0.010" diameter larger x Pi = 0.031416"

Stock rings tend to have a gap on the large side and the bore is likely worn slightly so you're probably talking about removing a max of about 0.014" from each ring end... 0.028" total.

That's equivalent to taking off the thickness of 3 to 4 sheets of paper from each ring end... not much at all. The Yamaha rings had a pretty big notch for the pin so I didn't touch that... there was still more than enough clearance.

Not saying it's the best thing to do but this was many years ago (before the Internet) and I had found a new piston but the only rings available were one size bigger. The machinist at the shop said it would be fine... he had a cool "piston ring file"... had a wheel with a hand crank... that he let me use and he helped me fit the rings to the new bore... didn't take much at all.

Thanks all for responding. I think I will get the rings, measure, and file as best I can. The bore is in need of some attention so I think it may be ok to try this. If nothing else I will have learned more about these small engines.

Interesting method of using a dremel...maybe this will work, I have all the pieces..
