1972 CT2 carburetor slide issue was created by ay18176

My 72 Yamaha CT2 has a issue with the carburetor
slide sticking when it sits for a fairly long period of
time. I’ve taken it off on several occasions and gotten
it out, cleaned bore put it back together and it’s fine
as long as it gets run on a regular basis. Bore and
slide look great. I’ve even lightly sanded bore with
3000 grit . I’ve made sure I don’t over torque flange
bolts when mounting carburetor back on bike. Ive
checked slide circumference with a mic. What am
I missing? Nothing ever looks bad when I push it out
after it sticks.

Have you checked your cables as I had the same issue with both of my CT2's - one was a kink from the bike sitting so long before I got it and the other was a frayed cable were it went into the connector.
2 - 73 LT3's
2 - 72 CT2's
2 - 73 CT3's

Next time,it happens--& before you do anything else--try loosening the flange nuts half a turn just to see if it frees it up. If it 'does' then we'll come up with a plan like file the flange flat & don't run an Oring in the flange [if grooved for one] that's not so fat that it requires some extra force to compress. Also if there's a chrome brass slide available that'd be a good plan as the original anodized slides hate moisture. For example we used to use chrome brass slides from yamy R5 twins in our YZ80's to stop sticking in the wet. Or was it a genuine slide we found that fixed the R5 & the yz80 sticking--umm, too long ago now. R5 have left & right with opposite guide pin grooves, plus 28mm carbs so i'm wandering off course again.

I had same issue that RT described with my DT1E, buffed bore and slide, on and off about a million times, got so pissed off.  It turned out that the flange was warped and when I tightened it the slide got clamped up.  I ended up filing it to fix.

I'm not sure what your definition of "a while" is... anyway, just wondering if you wash the bike off before you park it?

Seems if warped it would be more likely to stick all the time?

It could just be a tiny bit of moisture is getting in there and corroding just a tiny bit. Always good to completely warm up a bike and ride it after washing... plus remove the ignition and oil pump covers. Saves a ton of headaches.

Could be residue from the crap that is sold as petrol nowadays, particularly here in the UK.

E10 has been introduced here now, but I try and stick to E5 when I can. I'm told that there are some places that still sell petrol with no ethanol added.

You bring up a good point about the fuel. We can still get non ethanol where I live but who knows what quality you are getting these days. Going to clean the bore out and use some fine grit wet or dry sandpaper on it. Thanks for your reply to my problem.
