Hey everyone,

I have what I believe to be a 74 DT250. I'd like to get it running and get it race ready, in part, by stripping down electronics. It has most of the electronics still on it including the battery, headlight, taillight assembly, flasher relay, and rectifier. Here's a picture of the magneto/points/coils:

Can I just take the black wire from the magneto and run it right to the ignition coil, interrupting it with a kill switch on the handlebar? I know this bike came with a battery but I don't see how it would be necessary without using any other electronics.

Here's the coil with the black/white band wire that I would hook into:

Thanks guys!

Short answer--yep, black straight to the coil, & as you say, with a kill switch.

Tape off those other wires so they don't touch anything.

Kill switch wire simply tees into black and shorts the black to ground.  Not sure it that's what you meant by "interrupt".  (I've seen someone try to insert a switch to disconnect the black, doesn't work too well.)

In the diagram above you can see how "main switch" tees into wire from stator to ignition coil...  (highlighted in red)

Thanks for the reply! Yea I can see how using the word "interrupt" usually means just adding a switch in the line. Thanks for clarifying that the switch needs to connect it to ground.
