yamaha lt2 100cc starting procedure ? was created by matwom
hi guys
its been a while , so iv recently finished my 1972 lt2 100cc and i love , i just need abit more advice from you guys please .
is there a procedure to follow for cold / hot starts ?
i started the bike the other day and it took around 6 kicks with the choke on , is that normal ?
im not sure and it might sound abit of a silly question .
all in all its not running to bad but theres still acouple of things to iron out with her ,, at low revs when pulling off it does splutter but seems to clear at mid throttle , it also cutt out at low revs the other day for about 2 seconds then came back on ,
its had a full top end rebuild , new piston kit / rebore which is still being run in , new crank seals and bearings , full new loom and points and primary / secondary coil ,,, carb has been cleaned and new main jet , ,,, any advice would be great , thank you

Doesn't sound too unusual. Make sure to turn off petcock when parked and that spark plug is gapped to spec.
Don't twist throttle when starting cold... open throttle reduces effectiveness of starting circuit ("choke")
Finally, Tech Library has an owner's manual for the LT2 or 3... really the same bike pretty much... "official" starting procedures can be found in the manual.

Also go easy on the kickstart lever. The shaft is relatively small diameter and easy to strip the splines if you kick too hard. Parts are hard to find.
Also nice looking bike you have. I have one also.

As stated above keep throttle closed while cold kicking then if it fires still don't touch the throttle until its settled down & showing signs of richening up. Then close choke & ride away. Choke jet in the bowl side cavity can get blocked or restricted & that makes it worse to start on choke as give more air & not enough fuel to match. Jet is fixed down the hole & have to look closely & prod it from top & entry side on in the bowl. Super small hole it is.

Hi mate
Sorry to bother you but just had a question you might be able to help me with ,
My LT has had a full engine and crank case rebuild , I took her out for a spin the other day while the sun was out and she rode lovely other than a couple of low throttle splutters ,,
My question is does your use any gearbox oil ? ( I now it shouldn’t )
I checked mine the day after my ride and it seems the oil level has gone down slightly, I did about 10 - 12 miles , I’m still taking it steady as still running in, thanks mate , any help would be great

All of these Enduros will leak a little bit of transmission oil from the kick starter shaft, shift shaft and drive shaft with no issues. Just top it off as necessary. Replace the seals if it gets too bad. They should not leak transmission oil into the crankcase. The right side crankshaft seal needs to be 100% sealed. Otherwise it will run poorly and could also run too lean. And it could deplete too much transmission oil on a long ride. If the left side crankshaft seal is worn it will draw air in and run lean. Some of the aftermarket crankshaft seals are not as good as Yamaha OEM.
The hours spent riding my Enduros is not deducted from my life span.

Hi guys
just a quick update on the LT start up procedure,
I went to bike this morning and followed your instructions ( petrol on - choke on - ignition on )
I kicked the kick start once with no throttle at all and it started up first time , brilliant, thank you so much guys , should I use this same method with the RD 125 DX ?
thank you

If you check it cold & upright & note where it is on the dipstick. Go for your ride then check it the next day before starting using the same method with it vertical--upright, or however you want to think of it. You'll never get the same reading after its been running & oil flung around within the trans. If it doesn't have an obvious leak & its not smoking [a lot] more than normal then it'll be good. Bike looks 'just great' by the way.

Same "Cold" starting procedure on all twostroke Yamahas with that choke system. When its "Hot", [unless there's something else going on] you shouldn't need any choke & just a bit of throttle.
