Clutch bolt removal question was created by Grumman41

I’m currently attempting to remove the clutch bolts on my RT2 using an impact driver and penny to hold the movement. I thought the threads where right (clockwise) on these and I’m pretty sure my impact is set for the correct direction. These are not coming loose, not sure what to try next?

I’m removing the clutch because it’s stuck and at this point I want to inspect the plates. Kevin

Yes they are a right hand thread so you should be going counter clockwise to remove.

Clockwise threads on the spring screw yes--so long as you go anticlock to undo them. Not a fan of impacting those but i guess just to free them not to do them up or if you do to tightem just go easy. i just use a T-bar with a new tip to loosen & think i just used a new sharp screwdriver to tighten them on mine not the T as too easy to stuff those 5mm threads if i'm thinking right & are 5mm--i've got stretched old 5mm ones i should throw out before i use one & break it off through not studdying the threads as they obviously stretch at the base of the thread.

I do my 5mm clutch bolts RT style too.
I think its important to have JIS bits for your impact driver if that what it takes to loosen them. I tighten them by hand with my trusty T-handle JIS screwdriver. Learned the hard way to only hand tighten

Thanks for the input, I’ll move forward carefully and pick up some JIS bits. Since I’ve impacted these should I replace the screws?

They do not need to be that tight. And they do break off when too tight. Might not be a bad idea to replace them because someone has tightened them so much they might stressed to the point to be ready to break? Or maybe they used loctite?

Just snugging down with a screwdriver is tight enough.

Pretty strange but I came back to my project and the clutch screws came out relatively easy. The only different I done was zip tie the clutch lever overnight, doesn’t seem like that should have much if any effect?
Just going with it.
