Just don't breath the vapour released from the solution during the process and keep it off your skin.

I've tried the blue chromate, which is supposed to be a clear, but only found that it dulled the finish a bit so for bolts/nuts and washers I wanted to have a semi shinny finish I didn't use the chromate on them.
