The right colour on a RT2 360? was created by steffe50

Hi there, perhaps there's someone in the forum that knows a lot about VIN numbers and the different colour settings on the RT 1-2-3 360cc?

I recently bought a RT1 with the VIN number 100427, colour: red. The list on the site says it's a RT2 from -72 but that model was only made in silver colour. My bike really looks to have its original paint. Is that possible?

And, since I live in Sweden, is there simple way to find out how many owners the bike have had before it was shipped from the States (California plates, see picture)

That's a '73 gas tank. Probably manufactured late in '72 for the next model year.

Is the serial number the same on the frame and engine?

Is the front wheel 19" or 21"?

California DMV does not maintain or provide a "registration history" that would allow you to find out how many previous owners there may have been, they only keep a record of the most recent person to have owned it and even those records are frequently purged if there has been no activity for about 7 years. The easiest thing to do is look on the title you received from the previous owner, there will be a date (often shown as "OCID" date) that indicates when that particular owner initially registered the bike, and if that date happens to be back in 1972 or 1973 then you have likely purchased it from the first owner. Any further information would only be available through the California Highway Patrol, and they will not share any info with the public.

The VIN is definitely 1972 RT2, no mistake. So the tin color is silver, with black Yamaha lettering on the tank.

It's likely the cosmetics have been swapped over at some stage .
The RT3 came stock with a 21" front wheel , and yours is still sporting a 19" wheel .

Welcome! Stefan

What people are saying is that you are correct that it's a 1972. You are also correct that it could be original paint as it's very easy to simply swap the 1973 painted parts onto a 1972 which is likely what happened.

The original silver parts might have been rusty or damaged? Or I have seen people swap parts because they like the other model paint better. Some people really loved that 1973 copper color and the "Yamaha swoop" stripe on the tank where the 1972 looked plain in comparison.

Other people hate the "Yamaha swoop" stripe tanks and prefer the plain design of 1972.

Other than the paint color, the 1972 and 1973 painted parts are the same so the swap is very easy.

One interesting thing is that looks like the original blue California license plate that would have been issued on the bike originally. So it might be a single owner as many people used to swap for new plates when ownership changed. They didn't have to... but they did. Is there still a registration decal on the plate with a year? If it's a very old sticker it's likely to be a bike that was parked for many years and probably had very few owners... often only one owner.

Welcome! from the UK Stefan.

I agree with what the others have said. Check to see if engine and frame numbers match.

There has also been a little tinkering with the mudguards - the rear should be silver and the front is off a 1973 bike to match the tank (has the stripe up the centre).

Good spotting Al . I missed that stripe on the guard .
The front end has been fiddled at some stage . There are no chrome covers and reflectors
on the lower triple clamps either .
